Drones and batteries: how about that?
An important part of a drone is the battery. The battery is the fuel of the drone. It is important to use a good battery. Batteries come in different sizes and values. The most used batteries for drones are LiPo (lithium-ion-polymer) batteries. These batteries are known to have a high power per weight and fast charging, but also because of their danger when not properly treated.
LiPo battery
The most common battery in model building is a Lipo battery. These batteries have a high capacity for their weight and are therefore ideal for remote controlled cars and drones. The batteries have a low internal resistance, so they can deliver a high current. Battery
Load
The LiPo batteries charge very quickly and an empty battery is fully charged in about 1.5 hours. With LiPo batteries it is very important to use the correct charger. If the battery is charged incorrectly or if a LiPo battery is overloaded, it may become very hot, causing it to catch fire or even explode. It is therefore important to use the correct charger.
Never leave a LiPo battery unattended during charging. Regardless of the correct follow-up of the regulations there is a chance that something goes wrong during charging and your battery can catch fire.
LiPo batteries can be connected in series so you can increase the voltage. It is also possible to switch the LiPo battery in parallel with which the total capacity is increased. The capacity of a battery is expressed in milliAmpere-hours (mAh).
MilliAmpère-hour (mAh)
The capacity of a battery is indicated by milliAmpere-hours (mAh). MAh stands for the number of milliAmpere that can give a full battery in one hour (mA xh). The battery life is therefore easy to calculate on the basis of the battery capacity and the power consumption of the device. An example: An AA battery of 2000 mAh will last 9090 hours in a wall clock that consumes 0.22mA. 8760 hours in one year. The clock will therefore continue to tick for more than a year. A portable speaker for music that consumes 500mA will last 4 hours with the same battery.
Flight time
With a drone, the flight time depends, in addition to the battery capacity, on a number of factors. So the weather conditions are very important. With a lot of wind, the motors have to work harder and the drone will use more energy. The motors also need to work harder when more weight is attached to the drone, by weight of a camera, gimbal or heavier battery. The gimbal also consumes power from the battery. Many factors influence the battery consumption of the drone. Because of this, manufacturers always provide a flight duration indication that consists of a minimum and maximum flight time on one battery.
